9 Ways to Build Easy Links to Your Website
Google is used by 1.17 billion people. That’s a very large market of prospective consumers. In order to take advantage of this market, you need to your business’ website in front of as many of those eyes as possible.
Google decides what websites sit atop their search results with a complex algorithm. Thankfully, Google has provided a cheat sheet on how to best optimize your site for its search engine.
The long and short of it is that Google prioritizes websites that are informational, well-designed, and have a good online reputation. One way it determines a site’s reputation is by how many other online sources link back to it.
Ideally, this will happen organically, but for this article, we’re going to give you 9 ways to build easy links to your site.
1. Broken Link Building
With this method, you’ll be contacting webmasters of different sites to let them know that the links they may have on their website are broken – they go nowhere. Either because the site it was linking to shut down or some other reason.
In alerting them that the sites their anchor text hyperlinks to are down, you can suggest other websites to link to in their place, like your own!
Of course, you’ll have to find places to suggest your site in places where it makes sense. For example, if you own a shoe company, you’ll want to find websites with broken links that discuss shoes.
2. Guest Blogging
A great way to link back to your website is by doing it yourself! There are a ton of websites that accept submissions from contributors and allow for advertorials.
So look for blogs and popular sites that relate your specific niche. You can do this by searching with a keyword relating to your business + a phrase like “write for us” or “submissions.” If you’re that shoe company owner, for example, you’d search “shoes + write for us.”
Then, when you successfully find a guest blogging opportunity, you can link to your site in your article.
3. Internal Linking
This isn’t quite the same, nor as powerful as the other link building methods on this list. It is still important, however. When your writing content on your own website, you should always link to other pages on your site.
Doing this allows Google to more adequately scan your website, and generate an understanding of its layout. And the better it understands your site, the more likely it is that it will prioritize it in search results.
4. Follow Your Competitors
For this link building method, you’ll need to create a list of 5-10 of your online competitors. They might be Nike, Adidas, Asics, Jordan, New Balance, etc. if you own a shoe brand.
Then you’ll want to search for a few different list combinations of your competitors and try to find sites that list and link to all of them. Then, since your company is in the same niche, you can ask the webmaster to link to your site along with them.
They won’t always do it, but it’s worth a shot.
5. Find Sites in Your Industry
There are a lot of sites on the web that basically just serve as a phonebook for a specific industry. These sites are just lists of links to other sites that fit certain criteria. For example, there may be a blog post somewhere titled “Companies in the U.S. with a Female CEO” and the article list them.
So take the time to think about your company’s various attributes and try Googling along those lines. For example, if you own a new shoe store based in New York, try searching “list of new shoe stores in New York.” If your site isn’t already listed among them, try contacting the webmaster.
You can do this for as many attributes as you can think of.
6. Write Testimonials
Another good way to build links is by scratching someone’s back in return for scratching yours. Online businesses are always looking for customers to write testimonials for their service or product.
Think about the businesses you buy things from and reach out to them, asking if they’d like a testimonial from you. The only thing they have to do is give your permission to link to your own site in the testimonial. You could potentially get 10-20 links out of this method.
7. Donate to Non-Profits
Similarly, many online non-profits accept donations and list the contributors somewhere on their site. Sometimes, they’ll even list the names of the contributors and provide a small blurb about who they are and what they do.
You’ll want to find organizations like this and ask that they give you the opportunity to link to your website in return for your donation. It may sound skeevy, but many are happy to oblige.
8. Promote Your Content
This is a more roundabout way of building links to your site. It is simple, however: promote your content. Buy ad space on popular websites and social media platforms. Get your site in front of as many eyes as possible.
As long as your business’ website is good and the content is enjoyable, people will eventually link to it on their own blogs and social media profiles. But this won’t happen if they don’t know it exists. So get your name out there!
9. Reach Out to Bloggers
Instead of reaching out to a whole site, consider reaching out to individual bloggers. Freelance bloggers online tend to have a specific niche and they tend to write about that niche on various websites that also exist in that niche.
For your hypothetical shoe company, blogging sites that exist in your niche would be Hypebeast.com and Highsnobiety.com. Chances are, these two sites have some overlap in their writer pool.
So find a writer on these two sites, and ask him or her to plug your company in their next post.
